KOHLER® SERVICE

OIL
Oil is not just oil, it is as much a part of the engine as a piston or any other component. Kohler Command, CS Pro and OHC engines use SAE 10W-30 service class SF, SG or SH. These are detergent type oils. Kohler Magnum uses straight SAE 30 grade oil. It is worth remembering that an air-cooled engine will dissipate up to 40% of its heat through the oil.
Through advanced design and manufacture Kohler Command and OHC engines now have oil change and oil filter change intervals of 100 and 200 hours respectively. Kohler Command and Magnum Oil is available through our dealer network.

FUEL
All Kohler engines are designed to run on unleaded fuel, there is no need for any additives or blending of various run ratings. It is important to remember that unleaded fuel does have a short shelf life, perhaps as a general rule of thumb it is not a good idea to store fuel for more than a month, after that engines may have difficulty in starting.

FILTRATION
There are recommended guide lines set out below in the following charts with advice on Air Filters but it is really down to common sense as the environment each engine works in is different. A blocked filter will lead to poor performance and increased fuel costs. A damaged air filter, seal or gasket will lead to the ingress of contaminated air into the engine which may cause premature wear. It really is false economy to use spurious parts when genuine Kohler replacement parts may be sourced at an excellent price through our dealer network.

PLUGS
Modern spark plugs tend to be problem free, however, they are wear and tear items and as such they should be considered as normal maintenance items and checked over every 200 hours, either being cleaned or replaced depending on condition.
It is easy to overlook spark plugs when trouble shooting ignition problems. Perhaps the most sensible place to start is inspecting the spark plugs.
For plug part numbers and gaps see our Frequently Asked Questions page.

FINS AND SHROUDS
The cooling air is drawn through the flywheel and forced around and over the engine. Depending on the working environment of the engine a visual check over will usually be enough to check for any blockages. Blockages are more likely to occur on grass cutting equipment than a generator for example.
